Manchester Independent Economic Review

The Manchester Independent Economic Review (MIER) is believed to be the first independent economic review of a city-region.

Launched in June 2009, the Review provided an economic narrative to both inform and raise the level of debate regarding the economic future of the Manchester City Region within the economic development community.

The final report represents the sum of a year’s work, a large economic baseline, a comprehensive literature review, and seven specially-commissioned studies: Case for Agglomeration Economies; Innovation, Trade and Connectivity; Inward and Indigenous Investment; Labour Markets, Skills and Talent; Sustainable Communities; and the Daresbury Campus Review, from leading academics and consultancies including the London School of Economics.

The Review consisted of a Commission of prominent economists and business leaders and was commissioned by Manchester’s Commission for the New Economy, the economic development agency for Greater Manchester,

Funding was secured from the Manchester Innovation Investment Fund, which is supported by both the North West Development Agency (NWDA) and the National Endowment for Science Technology and Arts (NESTA), separately by the North West Development Agency, by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and by the North West Improvement Network. The Review is also funded, supported and underwritten by the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities AGMA)
