The Boardroom

“Innovation is a contact sport.” AnnaLee Saxenian

Want a real challenge? Be part of the Innovation Manchester Boardroom and find out more about the actions it generates.

Cities the world over are facing new challenges and opportunities over the next 20 years as they prepare for potentially radical changes to the way we live and work. M:KC believes that the cities to emerge as leaders will be the ones where collaborative innovation has been allowed to flourish.

Innovation is indeed a contact sport. Transforming a new idea into action always involves a team of collaborators, investors, advisors, suppliers, end-users, supporters or sceptical friends. And the biggest barriers to innovation include difficulty in finding the right connections, and the absence of a forum to test out and refine ideas.

That’s where the Innovation Manchester Boardroom comes in. Each Boardroom is different – focusing on a specific issue or opportunity, calling in relevant experts, conducting background research and supporting the selection of viable ideas for further action.

Many Boardrooms feature a workshop and networking event where any interested member of the Innovation Manchester network can take part – contributing and developing ideas, and taking advantage of the outstanding opportunities for connecting with other people who may be useful in their business.

M:KC designed the Innovation Manchester Boardroom with two goals in mind:

  • Developing a feedstock of viable ideas that city partners could develop and support
  • Making a long term change in how the city works as an innovative place – helping people across sectors to innovate better and faster

There will be a variety of Boardrooms taking place during 2010/11, just some of the challenges they will tackle include low carbon cities, public service innovations, cooperatives and mutuals and how to create more with less.
